GATE CITY — A familiar face will be on the sidelines at Gate City this fall.

Jeremy Houseright has been hired as the new football coach for the Blue Devil program.

DISTINGUSHED HISTORY

Houseright, a Gate City graduate, is only the sixth football coach to be hired at Gate City since 1956.

One of those coaches was his father Bill Houseright, who coached the Blue Devils during a 2009-2016 tenure.

Jeremy Houseright served as defensive coordinator for Gate City during the same time period, which included a state championship in 2010.

He served this past football season as defensive coordinator at Rye Cove.

MOVING FORWARD

As the new head coach, Houseright said in a statement to the media Wednesday that he is ready to take on the challenge of leading the Blue Devil program.

“It is an honor and I am extremely grateful to God, the Scott County School Board, Central Office staff and the Gate City High School administration for this opportunity,” Houseright said. “I will give the Gate City community my whole heart and will love and serve its young men to the best of my ability.

“It will take everyone from our coaches, to our parents and students and our community leaders to make this work. We will all work together to build on the pride and tradition of the Blue Devils from the past, present and the future.”

RECENT HISTORY

Houseright, who has also served as an assistant coach for the Gate City girls basketball program for the past eight seasons, assumes the football coach’s post after the resignation earlier this year of Mike Akers.

Akers’ teams finished a combined 7-24 in his three years at the helm.

This season, Gate City finished 1-9 for the second year in a row.

Gate City’s only win in 2018 was a 23-20 victory over Lee High on Oct. 12.

Gate City defeated Wise Central 14-12 in the final game of the 2017 regular season to avoid going winless.

In 2016, his first season coaching the Blue Devils, Akers led them to their only playoff appearance in the past four seasons. Gate City lost its first five games that year but closed the regular season by winning its last five. The Blue Devils fell to Glenvar 34-27 in the first round.
